The northern coast of Crete is an extensive sandy beach, with the beautiful town of Rethymnon, located on the west central part of the coast. Rethymnon has maintained its traditional aspect, more than any other town on the island, with its old, narrow streets, the houses with wooden balconies, the tall minarets and the old Venetian residences. Near Rethymnon, the historical Monastery of Arkadi, founded during the Venetian occupation is one of the many cultural places well worth a visit. To name but a few of the many attractive seaside towns along the coast : Adele, Stavromenos, Panormos and Bali, a small but very picturesque bay with its sandy beach.
How to get there
Despite being the farthest island of Greece, Crete has the best connections, both by air and by sea. By airplane : there are flights from most European cities as well as from Athens, Saronic, Mikonos and Rhodes in Greece. By sea from Pireus with many daily connections; in the evening at 18.00 or 19.00 hours.
