Syros is a Cycladic island and its wonderful capital, Ermoupolis, is the capital of all the Cyclades. The island is full of beauties and charms created by its unspoiled landscape, its authenticity and its traditional villages. The town of the island is full of Venetian and neoclassical buildings which make it one of the most beautiful towns of the country. The island’s nice beaches with crystal clear waters and the medieval village of Ano Syros are among its many attractions.
Syros lies between Kythnos and Tinos. It is located exactly in the middle of the Cyclades and was the cultural and trade centre of the Aegean in the 19th century and its capital, Ermoupolis, was Greece’s principal port and is today the largest town of the Cyclades and the capital of the archipelago.
Syros doesn’t have as many beaches as some other Greek islands and is not famous for its beaches but the island offers some nice spots for swimming and nice, clear waters. Most of the easy reachable beaches attract most of the tourists but, with a little search, one can find some nice, calm, secluded bays.
The main beaches are Vari Beach, the most sheltered bay on the island, Galissas, a very pretty beach protected from the winds, with golden sand and tamarisk trees offering their cool shadows, Agathopes, a nice tree-bordered sandy beach is a little south of Poseidonia with shallow waters and a little islet just offshore, Megas Yialos with two sandy beaches shadowed by trees and offering a beautiful view over the deep blue sea, Azolimnos with a beautiful, tiny beach with crystalline waters. Delfini Bay is in the north of Syros and has a beautiful sandy beach with nice, clear waters, Armeos a tiny, secluded and beautiful beach where nudism is allowed, The village of Finikas has a large bay sheltered from the winds and a narrow beach boarded by tamarisk trees and offering the possibility to do various water sports. It is also a safe area for yachts and sailing boats and has a little harbour to their disposition.
More nice beaches and bays can be found on Syros such as the north beach of Grammata, the deserted bay of Lia, the good swimming beaches of Kimata, Agios Nikolaos, Ambela (a quiet bay hidden between the hills), the highly developed beaches of Ahladi, Fabrika, Fetouri and Komito and the small, picturesque and quiet beach of Santorinious.
How to get there
