Monemvassia is one of the main attractions of the region of Laconia as well as the ancient and historical port of west Peloponnese. A rocky cliff, abruptly springing up from the sea surface, behind which lies, almost “hidden” one of the most characteristic scenery of all of Greece, the city with the single entrance, Moni Emvasis. It is the native land of the great poet of the left Yannis Ritsos, from whom it derives its name “Greece’s Gibraltar”. A unique and original site that can only be reached by land from Gefyra, a thin stretch of land functioning as istmo. Access to the village is only via a track running along the southern coast that reaches with some difficulty the lower part of the village, the Kastro (the fortress) and beyond it, the medieval part, perched on the rock at almost 300 meters above sea level. On top of a tall tower another fortress and inside it the church of Aghia Sofia (XIII century) built on the ridge of the cliff, 350 meters above the sea : its stunning position offering one of the most dramatic views of the whole Aegean.
