There are white perpendicular rocks, on almost all of the west coast of the island. That’s why the island is called Lefkada (lefkos = white). On the contrary, the east coast is all green, quiet, with many picturesque coves. One of these, Syvota, very similar to a description by Homer in the Odyssey, convinced the german archeologist Doerpfeld that the island of Itaka as described by Homer was in fact Lefkada. It is traditionally believed that, Saffo, the great poetress of ancient times, killed herself by falling off one of these high cliffs, consequently to her unfortunate love for Faone. Lefkada is the island of water sports, the wind is ideal for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, for all the different levels (beginner to expert) it is sufficient to pick the right time of day.
How to get there
